Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Alan Barber, 67, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at his home. Born in Santa Monica, California, his parents were Ezra Richard and Dorothy Pettit Barber. He graduated from Earl Warren High School in 1963. Alan joined the Navy and retired in 1983 after 20 years of service in missile tech and electronics. After his Navy career, he worked for twenty-one years at Rockwell Boeing International in California as a tech operator for submarine missiles. He also served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Wine Society. The Barbers retired to Oxford, MS, in 2004, where Al became involved in many community activities, including the Kiwanis club. He served as President, receiving recognition as “Distinguished Past President” and served as Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Division Two. He also participated in Newcomers and in The Spirits of Oxford. He especially loved traveling and pets. Al remained actively engaged in community service such as the Food Pantry, distributing free dictionaries and bicycles to schoolchildren and helping launch the Imagination Library Book Project. His charitable fundraising included Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, operating the Chamber of Commerce Parking Lot on a football weekends, and bell ringing on behalf of the Salvation Army. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 18, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife of thirty-four years, Nancy; his sister, Beth Pierce and her children, Eric and Larisa; a niece, Kim Abrahamson and a nephew, Mitch Barber, both of California.
