Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Harry Smith Calder, 53, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Memphis, TN. Harry was born June 23, 1956, in Greenwood, MS to Noble and Pauline Smith Calder. Although he was not expected to live past infancy, Harry was blessed with determination and a strong faith in God that enabled him to endure many operations and overcome his physical disabilities to live a full life. He attended Greenwood schools and Mississippi Delta Community College. He later moved to Memphis and earned an associate’s degree in Computer Technology from Shelby State Community College. Harry had been employed in computer technology by various businesses. He was a volunteer for the Memphis Grizzlies, and a fan of the Memphis Redbirds and Ole Miss Rebels. Harry also worked as an advocate seeking disability rights for all persons with special needs. He was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. Harry had a friendly, outgoing personality and was loved by many. He was very devoted to his friends and caregivers at King’s Daughters & Sons Home where he resided, and he was president of the Resident’s Council there. Harry was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Noble Franklin Calder, Jr. He leaves his brother, David Lamar Calder and his wife, Claire, and their daughter, Laurie, of Oxford, MS, and his brother, James Lloyd Calder and his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Chelsea, of Brandon, MS. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 17, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at King’s Daughters & Sons Home. A graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at New Providence Cemetery located at New Providence Baptist Church on County Road 460 outside Vardaman, MS. Memorials may be sent to King’s Daughters & Sons Home, 3568 Appling Road, Bartlett, TN 38133. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
